Xy Chromosome Chart. The X and Y chromosomes, commonly referred to as the sex chromosomes, are one such pair. They determine the biological sex, reproductive organs, and sexual characteristics that develop in a person.
The father can contribute an X or a Y chromosome, while the mother always contributes an X. XY system In humans, females are XX and males are XY. Typically, most people get one X chromosome from their biological mother, and an X or a Y chromosome from their biological father.
The thing is, XX and XY chromosomes aren't cut and dry, either.
As we become more educated, we learn that male and female are defined by possession of a specific combination of chromosomes, XX making a person female and XY making a person male.
Although males have an X chromosome, it behaves very differently when there is another X chromosome present compared to its behavior when a Y chromosome is present. The males have the XY chromosome type and the females have the XX chromosome type. Typically, most people get one X chromosome from their biological mother, and an X or a Y chromosome from their biological father.
